50,- EURO, coffee and lunch included.
Friday, April 17: Water, windmills and an old city
Kinderdijk
The Netherlands is famous for its windmills. There are still more than 1.000 mills. Nowhere in the world will you finde as many as near the village of Kinderdijk. Around 1740 no less than 19 sturdy mills were built here. They have been well preserved to the present day. The mills drain the excess of water from the Alblasserwaard polders - which are situated below sea-level - after which the water is sluiced into the river Lek. In 1997 the mills of Kinderdijk were put on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
Dordrecht
The historic city of Dordrecht lies concealed between mighty rivers. At the 'Groothoofd', where you will go ashore, the rivers 'Oude Maas' (Old Meuse), Noord and Merwede join up. Standing on the quay you will look out over the busiest river point of Europe. For centuries, the cloudy Dutch skies and this wide area have both been an
inspiration for painters and poets. Behind the 'Groothoofdspoort' (gate at the city's main jetty) the history is tangible. You can touch it in streets which were never meant for cars. The best traditions of a mediaeval mercantile city are reflected in nearly a thousand monuments. It is with good reason that the cityscape is protected cultural heritage. Few Dutch cities can measure up to Dordrecht in this respect.
A full day trip by boat with visits to Kinderdijk, worldfamous for its windmills, as well as to the historic centre of Dordrecht, the oldest city of Holland.
50,- EURO, coffee and lunch included.
If you want to join one or both trips, please tick the event(s) at the registration form on page 2.
